Title: Chee's new Sept/1986 MR2!!
Post by: BigMike on August 12, 2010, 06:57:05 PM
Hey guys!

My co-worker Chee finally bought himself a MR2! He picked up a sweet 1986 1987 MR2 in great running condition for just $700!

It needs some TLC and Chee has a bazillion plans for it. He wants to start with the suspension, going to get some coil overs, and then build an ultimate normally aspirated engine.

Chee will have to get in here and introduce himself to the forum. He has owned a lot of Turbo cars including a Turbo Miata, Talon, and an older Nissan Z-car, like a 240Z I think.

Enough with the chatter, here are pics of his new baby! :D  So how do you like the MR2 Chee? Unlike anything you've ever driven?

Since we don't need premium parts for the LeMons car we can swap parts to improve his car. If all are in agreeance

Hey Chee!!

I am with Misato in San Jose and I showed her the Chinese characters on the back of your car, and she said that it means, EXTREME

It's not that she can read Chinese, but it's that Japan adopted many of the Chinese characters into their language called Kanji. So actually most all Japanese people can read a Chinese book in a sense where may read, "dog rain enter shelter" and then they can assume it must mean "it was raining so the dog entered the house" or something like that. It's like 70% of the time the can sort-of guess what the Chinese means. This is because there are some cases where the Japanese take the same Chinese character and completely change it's meaning.

So, would that be a proximal adaptation, or a Migrational carryover from China?
Title: Re: Chee's new Sept/1986 MR2!!
Post by: BigMike on August 15, 2010, 10:31:10 AM
Have no clue. I asked Misato how Japan started, if it was some explorers from China and she said she doesn't know. Hmmmmm interesting.... Maybe they are all aliens afterall
Title: Re: Chee's new Sept/1986 MR2!!
Post by: Sirdeuce on August 15, 2010, 11:13:00 AM
Explorers from China? That would be a migrational carryover. Also, that would mean Japanese are actually
chinese decendants. Why do I see such friction between the two cultures? So similar to U.S.A./England relationship. I guess I now have a better understanding of the way some of my long lost friends were. The Shimadas and Hayashis never liked the Pings. And one girl ditched me after finding out I had seen a Chinese girl before her. What a drama that was!

glad to be on board guys, and yes it was cheap, i low balled the guy pretty bad, anyways sorry it took so long for me to reply.  well as for the mr2, ill prolly turbo it, putting the turbo and intercooler in the back trunk (need that supra ic bill), i already have the turbo which is a dsm t25 from my bro inlaw for nothing, no shaft play at all,  im guessing it'll last me awhile if i dont go over 16 psi, fuel management, ill probably do megasquirt running 450cc dsm injectors with resistors, a 255 lph walbro fuel pump and tial wastegate but not needed, hks, dsm, greddy bov's i have all three of them but not sure which one im going to use probably going for the hks just cause that JDM Tyte YO!  and 2.5' exhaust.  exterior:  zg fender flares from a zcar, new side skirts, buddy club replica or toysport front, repaint red and these wheels:

http://www.esmwheels.com/main/product_info.php?cPath=21_34&products_id=50

probably go wingless.

suspension: bc coilovers or homemade
engine: mike needs to give me his block in the back of the shop so i can put sc pistons in it.
hks cams, cam gears might not need them, springs and retainers oil filter relocation kit.

goal is to get 200 hp at the wheels

what do you guys think?

Look at Mikes old install on the IC. It's why he has the vent on the drivers side of his 2. Make an offer on the ic and I'll think about it. Need funds for builing this silly car. Oh yeah, when you want to exchange frunk hoods? I'll have this one off today.

http://www.bc-racing.co.uk/search/?pfind=Toyota\MR2\1986&search.x=51&search.y=17&search=search

bc rm coilovers these cost 1400 shipped

and a set of sc pistons with sc rods, i need to get some piston rings for the pistons though, 225 shipped which i though was damn expensive but i need them, toyota dont carry the pistons anymore.

need:

-piston rings
-arp rod bolts
-  arp head studs
-a bare head so i can put some bad ass valve train in. (bill, dont you have a spare head that you ported and offer if anyone wants it?)
-cams (not sure which brand and lift)
-cam gears
-bushings for suspension and motor mounts
-front and rear sway bars
-bigger brake kit (not sure what brand) Ksport?
-celica 6 speed conversion
-lsd if i can afford it
ou! and those sweet side skirts that you have bill.... :D

by the way those shocks you gave me were blown took it apart and its shot.
Title: Re: Chee's new Sept/1986 MR2!!
Post by: Sirdeuce on September 17, 2010, 04:15:18 PM
Ok, first things first. The struts may have blown shocks, but the springs will give a better ride, use the springs with your strut assemblies.
I have spare heads, but the one I started porting is not done. Suspension bushings can be found at Prothane, get the rack bushings too. The motor mounts are aa bit of a challenge though. The torque bushings, front and rear are available, but I can't find the compqany that makes them. I'll keep looking though. The left and right "hangers" I haven't found, but a urethane mix can be poured to reinforce them. I have a 2 part urethane mix. Sway bars should be balanced to your springrates and shock damping. Brakes, you are on your own, I like the brakes on the car already. The brakes will lock all the tires with no problems, try stickier tires first. If you get the right transaxle you'll already have an LSD. A lot of the 6 speed trannys came with LSD. Cams need be balanced to the rest of the engine. Just remember that stock cam followers are only good to about 8.5 mm lift, after that you risk throwing a shim. I have a set of TRD under bucket type followers if you are interested though. Cam gears are made by a lot of companies. And the side skirts are not mine to give or sell, sorry, they belong to the Little Deuce Poupe'. Team effort on that bit bro. Besides, they are chewed up a bit, need a little work. Get my # from Big Mike, or come up with him next time he comes up here.

Pair of WebCam grind 577s and a pair of HKS adjustable cam gears

Currently it's at $300 and no bids

EDIT: Actually, I am not sure if I want grind 577. They are not aggressive enough for my future plans...

227 Wheel horsepower. Take a look at: http://newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=321306

QuoteNotice: still making 218HP at 10,000 RPM, and at well over 100F no less - Gotta love Houston summers

This is a fully built N/A 2ZZ. It is NOT a stroker.

Mod list:
DD Performance Research Prototype Lotus Short Runner Intake Manifold
DD Performance Research 80mm short ram intake
DD Performance Research Ported Head (LR ported this one)
DD Performance Research Custom Wired Power FC
Forcedfed Lotus Header
2Bular lotus exhaust
Piper stage 3 cams
eibach springs
Supertech valves
Ti retainers
Custom wiseco high comp pistons
NGK race plugs
crower rods (regular ones)
MWR Chromoly light flywheel
Custom Lightened crank
underdrive alternator and waterpump pullies
Circuitworx oil pump

Pretty much an all out N/A build, minus stroker and titanium rods.

The injectors are in the head and I don't see any bosses for the fuel rail hold down bolts like on the 16v 4AGE head. Will you need to incorporate bosses into the adapter manifold? Or adapt the 20v manifold to the 2ZZ head and plug the injector ports in the head? If you didn't know, the 20v intake manifolds have injectors mounted in the manifold, side feed type. Centers on the 20v head is @3 13/32"

Title: Re: Chee's new Sept/1986 MR2!!
Post by: STUPID FAST on November 09, 2010, 10:17:24 AM
i dont think a remote mount turbo is smog legal, im thinking if i should go all motor or just built turbo na can only make so much hp while turbo i can have torque and hp.
Title: Re: Chee's new Sept/1986 MR2!!
Post by: STUPID FAST on November 09, 2010, 11:01:29 AM
also for that setup im going to have to get a oil pump to pump the oil back into the motor plus i have a 4cyl so it'll be a pain to get it to spool, maybe a really small turbo like a gt25 can spool fast with that setup.  if i do go turbo, i think imma go with the big boy turbos.

Find yourself an AWD Camry and turbo the V6. 4 doors, and family friendly. Not a bad car really. I had a 1990 V20, weighed in at a massive 2700 lbs, 400 more than the MR2 or AE86. It had the 2.2 5s-fe, like 130/130 output. Worse thing was the automatic! Only thing I did to mod it was KYB shocks, no big deal there. It was a huge improvement over the stock pieces! You could do a lot to it, and it could be a fun car! Show a little in this direction and maybe you could keep the MR2! Mods for the camry with the 5s-fe engine include suspension, and some lightening. The real fun is playing with the engine though. Put a 3s-gte head on the 5s-fe block, turbo 2.2 liter! Just a suggestion. You could think of it as a big AE92! Find a way to keep the AW11! Nothing wrong with a toy as well as a family car.

F20C + 6spd conversion. Keep the 250 HP and state ref it. 9,000+ redline, reliable, good gas mileage, don't rebuild it, just keep it stock. Strip the car a bit, 250 HP in a 2100 lb car will be FREAKING FAST man, you'll be faster than me with 17 psi boost probably

You won't like an 86.  They are boring cars, not much power, live axle. Not much you can do with one. You'd be better off with a '70 Malibu! Wait 'till you have a couple a tricycle motors. Minivan time!

I'm just razzin ya, Best thing would be to get a sensible family car and keep the MR2. Momma won't want you modding the family car anyway. Best wishes on the kiddo, and the best of luck.
