Title: December 3, 4 & 5, 2010: Arse-Freeze-Apalooza
Post by: BigMike on October 11, 2010, 09:38:12 AM
Okay guys,

I will FOR SURE attend the Arse-Freeze-Apalooza (http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/arsefreeze2010.aspx) near Bakersfield this Dec 3, 4 & 5. This is a great opportunity to experience what this is all about and to get some great advice and tips from other teams. I also know this will spark a lot of motivation that we'll need as we get closer to the next Sears Pointless event next March.

Click here for a map to Buttonwillow Raceway (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Fresno,+CA&daddr=24551+Lerdo+Highway,+buttonwillow,+ca&hl=en&geocode=Fc-5MAIdMmvc-CmdTp5U4V2UgDERuKNJZEASew%3BFU6LHQIduuDf-CkNc5WBcgfrgDE0gceC-gPLmg&mra=ls&sll=35.490167,-119.539146&sspn=0.041791,0.064888&ie=UTF8&z=9)

I plan on heading down Friday afternoon around 3pm, then return to Fresno later that night, and then head back Saturday morning to check out the inspections. If I am not too busy with school work, then I will stay all day Sat and also Sun.

Please let me know if you'd like to carpool or caravan with me.

Mike

Friday 3 December 2010
Noon-5pm: Mandatory Friday Tech Inspection. Every car and at least one driver per team must be present for Tech Inspection on Friday. No Saturday Tech will be offered!

Saturday, 4 December 2010
7:30am: Gates Open
8:30am: Mandatory Drivers' Meeting
9am: Lil'Mons PowerWheels Race*
10am: Race Session I Start
Sundown: Race Session I End

My plans for Friday
I REALLY REALLY want to see the Tech Inspections, but I don't get off work until 4pm! >< So I am gonna try to get the afternoon off and leave Fresno at noon Friday. I realize some of you guys will be at work, but if you aren't working that Friday, please join me!

My plans for Saturday
As for Saturday, I am also gonna go check out some race action. The race starts at 10am and I want to be there for the green flag. So let's meet somewhere Saturday morning, and leave Fresno no later than 8am. :_order:

My plans for Sunday
none

Okay guys,

I posted a question on the Official LeMons forum regarding a Pit Pass for this event.

It turns out FRIDAY INSPECTIONS ARE FREE!!!!!!!!!!

And as for a Pit Pass, they say it is $20/day for a "Paddock Pass", which turns out to be an "Everything-but-driving Pass". So for $20 you get to do anything, walk anywhere you want except onto the track.

For Friday, inspection is free. We might have to sign some insurance wavier, but it should be free.
For Saturday, it will cost $20 and we can go to the pits, talk to other drivers, meet other teams.

For the LeMons race, wouldn't it be appropriate to allow spectators on the track? Really test the drivers skill! Test the dodge car skill of the spectators too!

In the mean time, here are results after day one: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/12/arse-freeze-a-palooza-day-one-over-fed-up-e30-battles-cbr1000-engined-geo-for-lead/

Woah, did you read that the "Team America" turbocharged Miata has a Mazdaspeed engineer and a Garrett engineer on its team? :o :o

QuoteSpeaking of Mr. Coleman, we find that the team of the famous automotive journalist and Mazdaspeed engineer now has the third position in the standings, a mere one lap behind the Sweet Little Ladybug and F'ed-Up Express. Do some feel that a turbocharged Miata-based team has an unfair advantage with engineers from Mazda and Garrett on board? We think Eyesore does so well because they don't make mistakes, but LeMons conspiracy theorists believe otherwise.

Wow check these quotes out.. We saw the Heinz Ketchup car and the carbureted Turbo VW beetle driving around in the pits.

QuoteMeanwhile, something like half the vehicles that managed to clank onto the track done blowed up today, and the teams had varying degrees of success duct-taping them back into quasi-running condition.

QuoteTeam Hot Dogs Starion (actually a Conquest) nuking its transmission in the morning

Quotethe former Index-of-Effluency-winning Dust & Debris Dodge Shadow managed to consume one of its V6′s pistons this afternoon; all that’s left is a wrist pin, some ugly cylinder-wall gouges, and a fine sprinkling of aluminum powder all over the engine’s innards.

Quotethe -ing With Bad Ideas VW Beetle, which features a draw-through turbo setup on a Type 3 engine. This Volks was doing pretty well for a while, but then something (perhaps excessive cylinder pressure?) made some of the cylinder head nuts back off, which caused a base gasket (or whatever VW geeks call the gasket between the cylinder and block) to blow.

alright, back to studying........

On the VW, we used shims under the barrels to control compression. The oil was sealed with silicone. The thing I figured would kill the VW was a backfire! The pressurized side of the turbo was ABS waste fittings! A draw through turbo pushing a mixture of fuel and air under pressure through heated plastic! A minor, impersceptable leak past an intake valve???? BOOOOOMM!! But as for the actual failure? I'd say a head bolt pulled. A very common failure.

WINNER HAS BEEN POSTED!!!!   http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/12/and-the-winner-is-3/

It was the FedUp BMW E30!!! Apparently they have been slowly climbing their way up to the top: They entered all 4 West Coast events, and finished 10th, 3rd, 2nd, and now 1st!

This is how I vision us, a top-20 finish in March and then gradual improvement until we take 1st place :)  I don't think an MR2 has ever finished first, which is why we are gonna do it! Records are meant to be broken! :_order:

2nd place was the Turbo Miata with the two Engineers, and they also won as the overall LeMons National Champion and are getting a free trip to an actual LeMons race IN FRANCE!! WOW :o :o :o

Alright guys, that is our main competition right there. We've gotta beat an E30 and a Turbo Miata

I Wikipedia'd the E30 and they are 169 HP and 2300-3000 pounds stock. So I wonder if they have 180ish HP and 2000-2300 pounds, ohhhhhhhhhhhh man that is gonna be tough to beat

Here is the V8 Ford Model T GT

Then we made our way over to the tech and :bullshit: inspection area

All of these Civics we saw had D16 or D18 swaps. This CRX actually had a B16 swap at a former race and the judges laughed and asked what the last 4 digits of their VIN was. The owner said, "4687" (or whatever it was) and the judges said "Ok, that is the number of lap penalties for you" :ack:

Another D16 CRX

But this one had NOS!

My little pony Mustang :o

The guy to the left in the black cape was one of the :bullshit: judges. He opened the hood on the CRX and was like, "Ohh goodie, are these for me?" lol Then he promptly painted a "BRIBED" logo on the car's roof :tease:

Check out the interior of the CRX. WOW
(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww46/rakudasama/lemons/2010arse/IMG_4696.jpg)

I was particularly interested in that "HOT LAP" lap time device they had mounted immediately to the right of the steering column. Also note the yellow transponder? mounted to the cage up high (picture foreground). I wonder what something like this costs. Anyone know??

I really like this Celica. They spent a LOT of time theming it. My best guess is that it was a Mad Max theme. It was SA-WEEEET.

They had like 5 distributor caps mounted to the hood and intake plumbing from 101 different cars running all over it like it was some sort of space craft. I liked it

Check out this Porsche. How are they finding these cars for $500?? They had some sound system with lights and they played some hard core rap music for the judges. That was their theme, to look like a bunch of hip hop thugs

I liked the work they did to their doors. This is what we'll do to ours since we are now required to have doors (new rule for 2011).

I saw a couple cars out there with head gaskets zip tired to the roll cage. My guess is that they do this to show the judges that they bought the car for cheap because it had a blown gasket. We should do this for ours! Bill, got any old junk gaskets laying around

The guy in the yellow was another :bullshit: judge and he wasn't happy at all. They had aftermarket springs, shocks, and sway bars with NO DOCUMENTATION. They judge was like "Come on guys, you're making this hard on me"

Here is the table with all the bribes. So much boooooooze!!!

This is awesome, I think we should do something creative like this. That is a pressure plate atop some shocks with a clutch disk base :eyebrow:

And these Crab Cookies I can only imagine came from the Time Bandit car :yesnod:

Check these guys out. This is "Team Jailbait"

Check out their car number!! "Almost 18" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  :clap2:

More misc pics...

Every car was required to rev the engine while the judge flipped the kill switch. Every car had their switch mounted in seemingly random locations.

This is team "Air Prance" and their Citroën. I've seen pictures of this team online before

The guy had a little dance with the tech inspector. It was really funny and everyone was laughing and point fingers :)

Here is some huge Saab engine that looked like it was ready to break down

This Daihatsu team was telling the judges how they had a genuine race car

When they opened the hood they were pointing and bragging about everything. Such as, "This blue paint gives us 10 more HP, this brake master cylinder came from an Enzo, and this air box is from a Lamborghini" hahaha it was funny.

I like how they are getting air to the stock air box

This Bug pulled up and it really drew a crowd
(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww46/rakudasama/lemons/2010arse/IMG_4729.jpg)

They had some draw through carbureted Turbo setup that they judges especially liked. One judge laughed and said it will never make it through Sat. HA! (He was right, the bug did break down!)

They had this martian guy sitting as co-pilot.

I think their theme was to be martians or space travelers of some sort.

And get this, everyone is holding cans of SPAM!! LOL

Cool Supra. It was a 5M

Here is the engine from the Team Jailbait's Miata

Then these guys rolled up. HAHA This was awesome. They had an air powered Marshmellow cannon and were shooting marshmellows all over the place! It was great

Team Marvin the Martian!!

Hey what is that monkey doing to that poor football?!!

I liked this adjustable spoiler

Everyone had been asking us if we'd seen the Limo, where is the Limo, have you heard about the Limo. Finally it arrived. It raced! Pretty crazy!

Team America!

Many of these cars had the complete dash still intact like this

I liked this little 914 :yesnod:

Then we left the tech inspection and decided to find some MR2 teams.

We found the registration booth. Here is some apparel for sale

Here are all the transponders that each car is required to mount on board

Then we finally found a MR2 team, and what a treat it was!

This is a very famous MR2 team whose team page I have bookmarked (http://beater-car.blogspot.com)!

We must have hung out and chatted for almost a solid hour. They are from Oregon and this is like their 11th or 12th race with the same car!!

And when we walked around to the back, what did we find????? :o :o :o A 1ZZ-FE MR-S engine!!!!! DANG!!

But they said it is not wired correctly and is "barely" faster than the 4A. Well looking at the results from the race maybe they are right because they averaged a slower lap time and top speed than other 4A-GE powered MR2s of the day.

The MG with a 4AG? I'm liking the idea of a turbo. Our Poupe' won't just have piles of fake poop, it'll be a whole turd in itself.

I took a TON of pictures of their roll cage. They were extremely nice and offered us a LOT of advice!!

A bit messy

I took waaaaay too many roll cage pictures to share here. When we get ready to build our cage they will be most valuable

Check this out, this is the coveted "MR2 Cup" trophy that the fastest MR2 team wins after every race. They won this from the Sears Pointless event earlier this year in March.

Another MR2 rolled up and was actually a friendly competitor also from Oregon. Both teams drove down together and they've been doing it for years!

I also got a ton of pics of this other team's cage. It was done really well. We've got a lot of great pictures to look over.

This is the "stock" 4A-GE of this other car

Check out the stickers! This is the 6th event this MR2 has raced! NICE!

They said that the MR2 is surprisingly a very strong car for its size. They say it is one of the longest lasting LeMons car to build because it has so much sheet metal, it is VERY durable. They said other cars can't enter race after race after race but the MR2 can. That is great to know!!

And lastly, here is a cool two seater fiberglass car that was out there playing around just for fun. It was pretty SA-WEEEET!

And that's it! That was an AWESOME time! I took a lot of video but I don't think I will bother uploading them because it's mostly miscellaneous footage and it would take too long to edit out boring sections.

Can't wait to get our car built and join in on the fun!!!!!!!!! :_order:

Wow, this is good to know. The guys from Oregon said that team doesn't have the fastest car, but they always put up good results because of how consistent and organized they are.

In your dreams!! Compared to the MK1, the MK2 will fold faster than superman on laundry day!
