Does that Corolla look familiar? It should! Yes, team Schwing (winner of the last Texas LeMons race) grabbed the lead early today and has hung on through the first few hours.

Yes, they've painted their car white and given it a Ghostbusters theme, but it's the same car and same drivers. How is it that Team SCHWING is so good at LeMons? Basically, they don't get black flags; unlike damn near everyone else in the race, we haven't seen them in the punishment area all day. And, speaking of punishments, the reason I haven't had a chance to do any live coverage is due to the endless series of miscreants we've had to discipline. We've got some new punishments, including the Habitat For Dogmanity, the Studs & Spurs, the Mime Your Crime, and the Bob Ross Hood Painting.

Also, here is another FX16 that did a good job

LeMons Good Car Choice #1: Toyota Corolla FX16. The big danger with a front-driver is that you'll fry the clutch and then get knocked out for five hours while you disassemble the suspension, pull the transmission, etc. However, it's worth taking that chance with an FX16, because it's impressively fast, handles predictably (very important if you don't want to talk to me and Justice Lieberman in the Penalty Box) and has proven to be a reliable LeMons machine. Plus, that engine sounds incredible; check out this video from the Schumacher Taxi Service FX16 at LeMons South '08:

the bottom one stole our idea for mr2 wheels.and it looks like fx16s flip easy if they get sideways.not enough weight to push the tires.

I really like Bill's idea of tire selection. I prefer to have less sidewall than the stock 60-series profile tires, so I figured we could find a 15" tire at a wrecking yard and run a 50-series profile like what I did on my MR2 (15x225x50)...

But Bill recommended running a 50-series profile on the stock 14" wheels. This is a fantastic idea because it will stiffen up the sidewall and will reduce the diameter of the tire, which will shorten up the length of each gear so maybe we won't need a 6-speed.

And the smaller tires will drop the car by 1/2" or whatever, like as if we had a set of 1/2" lowering springs installed.

So better traction and a lower center of gravity all in one move

Using the MR2 wheels will limit the tire width to a 195 or 205 width tire. The 205 may exceed the width of the rim. 195 would give the best sidewall rigidity by keeping the walls closer to parallel. With the 195, an aspect of 55 would do best, 205, 50.

What other 14" wheels can we find with a matching 4-bolt lug pattern that are 6.5" or 7" wide?

Most FWD cars come with the same 4x100mm bolt pattern. Have to be careful though, the hub bore can be wrong for your car. Too small just won't fit. Too big will require hubcentric rings. A few cars to mention, Honda, VW, Mini, Nissan, jusi have to look around. Have to watch the offset too.

We have a large vertical mill we can bore out wheels with. I bored out some GMC 16" aluminum wheels when I ran 33" tires on my truck
