Hey guys!
My co-worker Chee finally bought himself a MR2! He picked up a sweet
1986 1987 MR2 in great running condition for just $700!
It needs some TLC and Chee has a bazillion plans for it. He wants to start with the suspension, going to get some coil overs, and then build an ultimate normally aspirated engine.
Chee will have to get in here and introduce himself to the forum. He has owned a lot of Turbo cars including a Turbo Miata, Talon, and an older Nissan Z-car, like a 240Z I think.
Enough with the chatter, here are pics of his new baby! :D So how do you like the MR2 Chee? Unlike anything you've ever driven?
Since we don't need premium parts for the LeMons car we can swap parts to improve his car. If all are in agreeance
Hey Chee!!
I am with Misato in San Jose and I showed her the Chinese characters on the back of your car, and she said that it means, EXTREME
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Didn't know Misato could read Chinese!?!

Didn't know Misato could read Chinese!?!
It's not that she can read Chinese, but it's that Japan adopted many of the Chinese characters into their language called Kanji. So actually most all Japanese people can read a Chinese book in a sense where may read, "dog rain enter shelter" and then they can assume it must mean "it was raining so the dog entered the house" or something like that. It's like 70% of the time the can sort-of guess what the Chinese means. This is because there are some cases where the Japanese take the same Chinese character and completely change it's meaning.
So, would that be a proximal adaptation, or a Migrational carryover from China?
Have no clue. I asked Misato how Japan started, if it was some explorers from China and she said she doesn't know. Hmmmmm interesting.... Maybe they are all aliens afterall
Explorers from China? That would be a migrational carryover. Also, that would mean Japanese are actually
chinese decendants. Why do I see such friction between the two cultures? So similar to U.S.A./England relationship. I guess I now have a better understanding of the way some of my long lost friends were. The Shimadas and Hayashis never liked the Pings. And one girl ditched me after finding out I had seen a Chinese girl before her. What a drama that was!
What the heck is all this about anyway?? This thread is supposed to be about Chee's car!!
LOL! That picture is epic!
Hmmmm, new idea for team theme. The Gauady Elvii!!!
glad to be on board guys, and yes it was cheap, i low balled the guy pretty bad, anyways sorry it took so long for me to reply. well as for the mr2, ill prolly turbo it, putting the turbo and intercooler in the back trunk (need that supra ic bill), i already have the turbo which is a dsm t25 from my bro inlaw for nothing, no shaft play at all, im guessing it'll last me awhile if i dont go over 16 psi, fuel management, ill probably do megasquirt running 450cc dsm injectors with resistors, a 255 lph walbro fuel pump and tial wastegate but not needed, hks, dsm, greddy bov's i have all three of them but not sure which one im going to use probably going for the hks just cause that JDM Tyte YO! and 2.5' exhaust. exterior: zg fender flares from a zcar, new side skirts, buddy club replica or toysport front, repaint red and these wheels:
http://www.esmwheels.com/main/product_info.php?cPath=21_34&products_id=50
probably go wingless.
suspension: bc coilovers or homemade
engine: mike needs to give me his block in the back of the shop so i can put sc pistons in it.
hks cams, cam gears might not need them, springs and retainers oil filter relocation kit.
goal is to get 200 hp at the wheels
what do you guys think?
Look at Mikes old install on the IC. It's why he has the vent on the drivers side of his 2. Make an offer on the ic and I'll think about it. Need funds for builing this silly car. Oh yeah, when you want to exchange frunk hoods? I'll have this one off today.
whenever is fine. but i need that ic though, how much?? if you can, can you cut off the out lining where the side vents goes, imma do what mike did with the vent on the driver side, if your not doing anything ill appreciate it. thanks
You talking about the vent on the side of the white MR2 we got here?
yeah that one. hey if you can, can you get the vin off the lemons car, i need the vin so that i can get pistons from toyota for my build thanks
You get all 4 struts from Mike yet?
who brought me the struts to the shop? whoever it is thanks!
Guilty as charged. Now, stop bouncing around town.
Chee just made a large purchase of parts for his MR2 :)
OoooOOOOOoooooo what'd he get?!
http://www.bc-racing.co.uk/search/?pfind=Toyota\MR2\1986&search.x=51&search.y=17&search=search
bc rm coilovers these cost 1400 shipped
and a set of sc pistons with sc rods, i need to get some piston rings for the pistons though, 225 shipped which i though was damn expensive but i need them, toyota dont carry the pistons anymore.
need:
-piston rings
-arp rod bolts
- arp head studs
-a bare head so i can put some bad ass valve train in. (bill, dont you have a spare head that you ported and offer if anyone wants it?)
-cams (not sure which brand and lift)
-cam gears
-bushings for suspension and motor mounts
-front and rear sway bars
-bigger brake kit (not sure what brand) Ksport?
-celica 6 speed conversion
-lsd if i can afford it
ou! and those sweet side skirts that you have bill.... :D
by the way those shocks you gave me were blown took it apart and its shot.
Ok, first things first. The struts may have blown shocks, but the springs will give a better ride, use the springs with your strut assemblies.
I have spare heads, but the one I started porting is not done. Suspension bushings can be found at Prothane, get the rack bushings too. The motor mounts are aa bit of a challenge though. The torque bushings, front and rear are available, but I can't find the compqany that makes them. I'll keep looking though. The left and right "hangers" I haven't found, but a urethane mix can be poured to reinforce them. I have a 2 part urethane mix. Sway bars should be balanced to your springrates and shock damping. Brakes, you are on your own, I like the brakes on the car already. The brakes will lock all the tires with no problems, try stickier tires first. If you get the right transaxle you'll already have an LSD. A lot of the 6 speed trannys came with LSD. Cams need be balanced to the rest of the engine. Just remember that stock cam followers are only good to about 8.5 mm lift, after that you risk throwing a shim. I have a set of TRD under bucket type followers if you are interested though. Cam gears are made by a lot of companies. And the side skirts are not mine to give or sell, sorry, they belong to the Little Deuce Poupe'. Team effort on that bit bro. Besides, they are chewed up a bit, need a little work. Get my # from Big Mike, or come up with him next time he comes up here.
blingn
Hey Chee,
Can you use these cam gears? I might want to pick up these cams but I can't afford the entire auction right now... It ends tomorrow morning
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280561746237
Pair of WebCam grind 577s and a pair of HKS adjustable cam gears
Currently it's at $300 and no bids
EDIT: Actually, I am not sure if I want grind 577. They are not aggressive enough for my future plans...
What if Bill bids on those cams?
hell yeah i can use those cam gears. you wanna do a split on buy, you get one cam gear and cam shaft ;D :P yeah we can get em, im up for it dont want those cam shaft though.
Tooooooo late
what the heck? bidding has ended already? did you buy it bill?
I forgot to bid, but there will be others.
nice! ready to install this tonight mike? ;D
Hurry up and get them installed!! I want to see how they feel!!
it is possible, u can see how they feel.
Hey Chee, check this out (2nd gen):
that is what i want to do with my ic setup, but damn! thats one big ass ic.

Supercharged Camry 1MZ-FE 3.0-liter
247 HP & 242 TQ
Actually, a Supercharged 4A-GZE will have better top end as will a 2ZZ-G
ZE.
I like the 2ZZ! Is it CARB legal like that? Moving the Battery would give a better intake though.
just put a down payment on a 2zzge w/ complete wiring harness and evap canister no ecu though, should be picking it up this weekend, the guy is a known celica member on the newcelica forums, that motor did 189 hp with a apex power fc piggy back.

couple pics and vids on his dyno and parts
Why is he parting out the car??

BTW, you can hear the Toyota VTEC (VVTL-i (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VVTL-i#VVTL-i)) kick in right at the beginning of the video.
rear ended by someone, he has a bunch of parts he's selling thats never installed also.
ahh I see. Okay, I did some looking around and check this out...
This guy might be made of money and or be a bit snoby: He owns a 2001 Jag S-Type http://www.cardomain.com/id/jst2gtby
The car wreck *OUCH*:
Some work to the front end:
Some one teepeed his car and then some lol:
Check it out, there is your engine!!! 8) 8)
Ahhh here ya go:

2000 Celica ... Engine specs:
QuoteTRD GROUND WIRE KIT
OPTIMA RED TOP BATTERY
OBX SHORT SHIFTER
AEM CAI W/ K&N AIR FILTER
TRD CAZUMA EXHAUST
Ummm I don't think the OBX short shifter qualifies as an engine modification :D
Wow I gotta get a TRD ground wire kit, I bet that will add at least 8 horsies to my engine if not more
So it looks like the guy was also thinking about turbocharging this engine:
http://www.celicahobby.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB4&Number=1870195595
blingin
the guy actually bought a turbo kit and sold it to a guy down here in fresno. 2zz turbo in my opinion is a bad combo, compression is too high. for a 1zz it'll be good
mike you have to go with me to get that motor man, screw the test!
Ground kit won't add horsies, just stabilizes them.
ok guys just got the duzzy on sunday, all im waiting for is tranny, mr2 91+ na axles, and some little bits and pieces, ill try to post up some pics of the motor soon.
just a thought... i wonder if we can make a adapter to fit ae111 itbs on the 2zz? whats your thought on it mike? you think i should get a set of itb's and make it work?
Bill has an AE111 ITB set at his place! Anything is possible if you have a piece of billet aluminum and a lot of free time on your hands
Here is what the intake ports on the VVT-Li head look like:
227 Wheel horsepower. Take a look at: http://newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=321306
QuoteNotice: still making 218HP at 10,000 RPM, and at well over 100F no less - Gotta love Houston summers
This is a fully built N/A 2ZZ. It is NOT a stroker.
Mod list:
DD Performance Research Prototype Lotus Short Runner Intake Manifold
DD Performance Research 80mm short ram intake
DD Performance Research Ported Head (LR ported this one)
DD Performance Research Custom Wired Power FC
Forcedfed Lotus Header
2Bular lotus exhaust
Piper stage 3 cams
eibach springs
Supertech valves
Ti retainers
Custom wiseco high comp pistons
NGK race plugs
crower rods (regular ones)
MWR Chromoly light flywheel
Custom Lightened crank
underdrive alternator and waterpump pullies
Circuitworx oil pump
Pretty much an all out N/A build, minus stroker and titanium rods.
The injectors are in the head and I don't see any bosses for the fuel rail hold down bolts like on the 16v 4AGE head. Will you need to incorporate bosses into the adapter manifold? Or adapt the 20v manifold to the 2ZZ head and plug the injector ports in the head? If you didn't know, the 20v intake manifolds have injectors mounted in the manifold, side feed type. Centers on the 20v head is @3 13/32"
Here is a pic of the Blacktop 20v head, intake side. Sorry, no pic of injector set-up as the batts went dead in the camera. Notice the hump for the injector. Would have to be incorporated into adapter.
Hey Chee,
How about a smog legal turbo setup like this:
i dont think a remote mount turbo is smog legal, im thinking if i should go all motor or just built turbo na can only make so much hp while turbo i can have torque and hp.
also for that setup im going to have to get a oil pump to pump the oil back into the motor plus i have a 4cyl so it'll be a pain to get it to spool, maybe a really small turbo like a gt25 can spool fast with that setup. if i do go turbo, i think imma go with the big boy turbos.
Be a big boy and go N/A!
hahaha
i know but it just cost too damn much to get 230+ at the wheels i think ill like the na power better though.
bill, you know any shop around town that does good head work p&p heads and valve jobs
Last shop I ever tried to trust was RaVer out of Visalia, but who knows if they're still around. Ask Mike to put you in touch with the buds down at the dyno shop. Maybe they know a good port guy.
maybe i should ask justin at precision auto
I haven't had specialty work done on anything in nearly a decade. Out of touch.
last i heard, raver is long gone, not in business anymore
Yeah, it's been awhile. Wonder if my buddy Joel can get ahold of Vernon?
ok guys i have bad news for you guys, since im having another kid on the way, my wife does not want me to keep the mr2 cause its only a 2 seater, she says if im going to built a car its going to have to be a 4 seater or a 4 door vehicle, im so bumbed out right now. im guessing a ae86? dont know yet but im going to have to sell the car and the 2zz
Find yourself an AWD Camry and turbo the V6. 4 doors, and family friendly. Not a bad car really. I had a 1990 V20, weighed in at a massive 2700 lbs, 400 more than the MR2 or AE86. It had the 2.2 5s-fe, like 130/130 output. Worse thing was the automatic! Only thing I did to mod it was KYB shocks, no big deal there. It was a huge improvement over the stock pieces! You could do a lot to it, and it could be a fun car! Show a little in this direction and maybe you could keep the MR2! Mods for the camry with the 5s-fe engine include suspension, and some lightening. The real fun is playing with the engine though. Put a 3s-gte head on the 5s-fe block, turbo 2.2 liter! Just a suggestion. You could think of it as a big AE92! Find a way to keep the AW11! Nothing wrong with a toy as well as a family car.
dang that is nice!
You don't want an AE86 Chee!
an ae86 would be bad ass
ok guys here it goes, found a couple of ae86 for pretty cheap, f20c's are 2500 with tranny, i think that would be a sweet project. have my mind on a ae86 with a f20c maybe even a bt. imagine the sound of itb's on a f20c :rockingout: :rockingout: :rockingout: :rockingout:
Yous gotsa baby onda way. Last thin youa needin isa sporty car.
Minivan time!
I don't have any kids at home, I can have a sporty car. Mike doesn't have kids, he can have a sporty car. Now you have a kid, YOU GET A SPORTY MINIVAN!!
i guess im going to have to buy a previa
what about a rav4 2 door awd 5 speed, its got the 5sfe, i can do a head swap from the 3sgte
sorry my mistake it has a 3sfe
Get the Previa S/C, at least it'll be boosted! 2TZ-FZE
You won't like an 86. They are boring cars, not much power, live axle. Not much you can do with one. You'd be better off with a '70 Malibu! Wait 'till you have a couple a tricycle motors. Minivan time!
remember bill, i can get either a 4 door or a 4 seater. ae86 here i come!
The woman will prefer a 'sensible' car for the family. Minivan time! hahhahahhahahhaa
I'm just razzin ya, Best thing would be to get a sensible family car and keep the MR2. Momma won't want you modding the family car anyway. Best wishes on the kiddo, and the best of luck.
we're getting a family car soon, but i also need a vehicle that i can take my kids in, thats why the ae86 would be good.
Wish I could buy your 2
ill trade the 2 for the old school celica
With or without the 2ZZ?Eithe way, I'm sure we could talk 'bout it.
I got the 18RG head and timing cover if you want to go oldschool.

Two of my favorite things! high revving engine and night driving!
Change your mind about an old school Celica?
I hear you talked the woman into letting you keep the 2. Even better than starting an old school project. Starting any new project really! Only sad thing is the loss of not having to deal with the SMOG crap. Get that 2ZZ swap done now!
i need to, i should be getting a tranny by this week
I still have that hood. Yours if you want it.
Nice looking Starion Chee! Suggestion, right off the bat! Head studs, and MLS gasket! And don't ever let it overheat. I've wanted one for a long time!
thanks for the advise bill, just sold the mr2 and coilovers, need to sell the 2zz next for a possibly 4g63 or 2jzgte swap
