Cars / Re: World's fastest Corolla GTS

A few years back I was looking at the Pan Am races, and there was a Corolla running mid 7's. The class required the use of the stock block for the car. Internals could be changed, but the block and head had to be factory pieces. Yeah, a 4age putting 700-900 ponies to the ground. And for the AW11 crowd, I've seen a few MR2s break the beams at under 10 seconds!

I've driven my share of cars. Owned a few as well. Currently have a Corolla FX16 GTS and Mazdaspeed3. Both cars are an absolute kick to drive.But....... As a devout Toyota fanatic, I hate to offer praise to any but Toyota or bash a Toyota in any way. Too bad in this case. My wife and I took a Corolla 'S' on a trip to the SF Bay area this last weekend and the only definition I can come up with for the 'S' is sleepy, snooze, subdued, snore and so on. A manual trans may have helped, but I think not. The suspension is not as good as the suspension in my '73 Celica, more akin to an American luxury car(boat on the water).  The absence of any noise from the engine can lull you into a coma on a trip of any length. Steering feedback is like an American luxury car, none. After a trip into town I have to take a nap, it's that boring. What happened Toyota?? Did you lose a bet with Nissan or Honda? Get back to what you once were and stop disappointing. If the Corolla has turned into this traquilizer, and is any indication of Toyota's current idea of of , I think I'll pass on the Scion FR-S.

I wish I had a camera!! I just came up with the sickest cheat! How about a set of "helper" springs mounted in the center of the stock springs? Would be like dual valve springs. My Ground Control spring set for the FX16 fit perfectly in the stock set! Could use a set of shock boots to hide them for inspection, then tear them out for the race. We could add a 100lb spring to the front and a 200lb to the rear(for example). And the differing spring rates and charateistics cold possibly have the same affect as dual valve springs, cancelling each other's harmonics. Plus, there are soooo many options available, it staggers the mind. Spring rates, progressive, linear, multi rate, multi spring. All installed with the stock spring. Go to the Eibach spring site to blow your mind with the possibilities.

I just learned the true meaning of the flag!! 'Tal boils down to the colors, red, white and blue. Y'all should take this to heart, it's what this country is built on, by and for. Red neck, white trash, and blue collar.

OK, I have a piece of alluminum 1" thick. I'm going to try to get down to the shop to make a set of roll center adjusters, and maybe blocks to drop the engine. See how things go with that. Also, I tried the oil pan from a 20 valve block on the 7A, it fits. Figure the 2 piece pan that comes on the 7A would raise questions at inspection time. The 20v pan looks like a regular 4A pan.  I'll have to have Mike post pics, the saltwater bath I gave my camera ruined it.

Roll Cage & Safety / Re: Brakes
September 14, 2012, 11:00:30 AM
Since this is in the 'safety' arena, and close to the brakes. I think we should consider replacing the wheel bearings as well. So, Mikey, look at your supplier for those parts as well. And if you think it's REALLY necessary, new locking rings as well for the rear hub cartriges. Brown paint on the suspension parts as well??

Then just get the rings. Cast iron or steel, does it specify?

Brakes / Re: Larger than stock

Looking at the ST185 rotor in the pic above makes me wonder if the hub assy. could be bolted onto the MR2 ball joint and tie rod. The strut hat should be interchangeable, so possibly the entire strut assy. could move over if needed. Also, would the axle splines be the same as the Mr2.  Sounds like a trip to the yard.

Does your supplier have a line on DBA ( Disc Brakes Australia)? I have these on the 3, and they do quite well. I like the theory behind them, makes sense. The rotors should be able to handle the rigors of trak life better than regular style discs. Look 'em up.

Would you like the tag to keep in your records for future reference? I could drill out the rivets and you could glue it into your glovebox for permanent record.

pistons and rings Toyota or aftermarket? If aftermarket we just need the rings. Verify ring thickness as well, 1st compression is 1.2mm, second compression is 1.5mm, and oil control is 2.8mm, .5mm overbore. I have 2 sets of rings already, but, they are for the earlier pistons at 1.5, 1.5, 3.0. One tandard and one .5 over.  That supplier will never get my business again.
