Look at what other teams are doing...
This is a list of engine swaps at the Sears Pointless BS Inspection this year:
RX-7 with a Ford 302
Toyota pickup with a Chevy small-block
Volvo 244 with a Chevy 350
Jaguar XJ6 with a Chevy 350
E30 with a Ford 302
Ford 302-powered "V8olvo"
Porsche 944 with 928 engine swap
If we built a sweet 4A-GE with a ton of internal goodies and make the engine look dirty and ugly then we will walk out like bandits from the looks of things. People are trying to bend all kinds of rules.
We'll have a lil 4cyl that is dirty and greasy with some fake oil leaks. It shouldn't be hard to walk away with cams, my VVT gear, flywheel, 6spd trans, crank scrapper, baffled oil pan, light weight internals, etcetera
even the microsquirt dyno tuned and stashed into the Toyota ECU case should be easy to get away with.
That is a swapped FORD V8 into a RX-7 with MAZADA written on the valve covers. I MEAN COME AWN!!

From Wikipedia:
Ford 302 V8
The most common form of this engine used a two-barrel carburetor, initially with 9.5:1 compression. It had hydraulic lifters and valves of 1.773 in (45 mm) (intake) and 1.442 in (36.6 mm) (exhaust), and was rated (SAE gross) at 220 hp (164 kW) @ 4600 rpm and 300 lb·ft (407 N·m) @ 2600 rpm. Optional was a four-barrel version rated at 250 hp (186 kW) @ 4800 rpm.
Mazada RX-7
FB stock weight: 2300 lbs
FC stock weight: 2600 lbs
So we are gonna compete against 250 HP 2300 lb cars? DANG. I'm going to find out how many laps they got penalized...
hahahah i just noticed this:

How many valves does that SR20DE engine have? LOL
BTW that SR20DE is a nightmare to work on. It is a pretty large engine crammed into a small engine bay. I HATE working on my Infiniti. And Nissan has eleventy bazillion wires and fuse boxes all over the place in there, its a huge rats nest compared to the simplistic 4A-GE.
Here is the Chevy 350 in the Volvo.
Check out the nice tires.
EDIT: This car finished in 20th place. It is a Volvo DL. Completed 107 laps on Sat, 175 laps on Sun, for a total of 281 laps. They were only penalized ONE B.S. lap.
OK
The RX-7 with the Ford V8 and the Porsche 944 with 928 engine swap both got 300 penalty laps!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

3VZ-FE, 24 valve 3.0 in an MR2. Or how about a 1UZ-FE 32 valve V8.

If we could prove that we got the car running with a 3VZ-FE for under $500, then certainly we could get a 4A-GZE to slip by.
How about looking for a low price GZE? We've got a lot of time to find one.
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Look, after looking at what the winners are running, I think even if we just ran a 130 HP mildly tuned 4A and we get the car under 2000 pounds, maybe under 1900, then we will have a serious contender.
cutting the partition between the engine bay and trunk will make it alot easier to work on the engine even though its not that tight now.are there any engines we can drop in the mr2 to make 180hp.
nevermind it will take to long to sort out the engine before dec
Look at the Toyota 2ZZ, 180hp, 8000rpm.3SGET, Beams 3SGE dual VVTi. Several honda engines, B18, B20, K20, K22, K24, 3.2liter V6(Accord, NSX), Nissan SR20, SR20DET, Mazda MZR (Speed 3,6, CX7). Mitsubishi 4G63. Blah blah blah. All the forementioned engines are trasverse mount, and quite capable of rediculous outputs. All have a vast aftermarket too.
i agree with mike about being conservative about the engine. just need to hold the thing together for a whole entire race, dont need to go crazy than break something.we arent gonna have much test time cause the car aint gonna be ready for awhile.
Kevin,
