Here are the results from a quick acceleration comparison. The engine used is 130 HP @ 7000 RPM and 107 TQ @ 4800 RPM, redline of 8,000rpm. Weight is 1900 pounds with 55% on the front wheels. All four cars had the same identical data except for transmission (5 or 6 speed) and tires.
C52 is the standard 5-speed transmission & C60 is the 6-speed transmission we can use from a Pontiac Vibe.
The two tire sizes I compared are 13" rim Vs. 14" rim, both having the same 205mm width and 50-series profile.

I really like the 13" tire using the 6-speed transmission. It is the best in all gears from 30-50 mph and also from 50-70 mph.
The 14" tire with the 6-speed is a close 2nd. What do you guys think?
I think a 195 55 14 would do fine. The car is light, don't really need that much footprint. The biggest problem I come across with my tires is rolling to the sidewall in a turn. The stock 185 60 14 allowed too much understeer. The steering response was 'drunk' feeling. Steering input felt delayed. I ran 195 55 15 and the tires were really too much for the stock suspension. A 50 series tire on 14 will probably be the same. We'll have to see where we are with the suspension before we decide on a tire/wheel size and aspect ratio. A better balance in the tire/wheel/suspension is better than just slapping on some big meat.
Also need to see what junkyard wheels will fit.
