Title: NEW MR2!!!
Post by: BigMike on March 21, 2010, 08:28:55 PM
I helped Bill pickup this SA-WEET 1987 MR2 from Lemoore today 8)

It has a TRD header, HKS muffler, Nology Hotcore spark plug wires, a low mileage engine, low mileage transaxle, and new drive axles.

The Bill of Sale says Bill only paid $200 for it 8) 8) 8)

The front and rear bumpers and the HKS exhaust muffler are in the back of the Tundra, and all the plastic trim and missing body panels, such as the drivers rear corner, are in the interior of the car. So everything is here to put it back together as much as we'd like to.

The only problem with this is that it is from Minnesota and has not been registered for a very long time. Registration fees would be stupid expensive + we'd have to pay import taxes since the car is out-of-state, so it looks like registering the car so we can drive it to AutoX might be out of the question.

I have a flat bed trailer I can toe the car to and from AutoX events, which is a huge burden and PITA, but it can be done. You'll notice I slapped my Truck license plate on the back just so we could tow it to Fresno like this (if any part of a car is touching the ground, it must be registered).

I 1,000% prefer the MR2 over a FX16, what do you guys think?

MR2, definately! But the FX would still be a lot of fun. We have a $300 window for parts now. Let's see what we can get for the extra parts on ebay. Now we need to post on this under the Bill's FX16 area.

Hey, we can sell those 17" wheels for $150 maybe? On second thought, they are pretty hideous, maybe $100 :D

I want the wheels for the FX16!!

hay that thing is awsome mike you dont know anything about wheels do you without those things its just another pile. but this thing is rear wheel drive! looks great

by the way the plate switch thing is a very bad idea it would be better to not have one. Being a felony to put the plate off of another vehicle! dont do that anymore. i would come visit you and send you five dollars a month for the commissary

well, at least they won't pull me over in the first place? Besides, I would just say the car is not mine and that Bill stole my plate and send his butt to jail hahahah

Lightening the 2
Start in the back, bumper, tail lights, PLATE, stock intake, cut out trunk firewall, remove bracing from decklid and trunk lid, trunk lid springs. Any non-structural metal can be lost. The engine compartment can lose the A/C compressor, and the battery tray, battery will bemoved to the front. Remove A/C and heater lines from the tunnel. We can use the oil for heating if need be. Gut the interior. Door seals and moldings can go. Cut all unecessary metal from the doors, could tack weld the passenger door skin in it's frame. Remove all unecessary elictrical wiring and accessories. From about he front firewall forward probably keep the geneeral weight. Just remove things not being used. Tack weld the light covers to the trunk lid. We can use the turn signal holes to get cooling air to the brakes. Any hole or gaps can be covered with tape. Any other ideas?

Since we don't need windows or anything, we can even take it further than what this guy did

Here are pictures of the engine, nice and greasy and ugly, just what we want :)

Here are a couple close ups of the Nology Hotcore wires. I like the spider webs in the background.

I still need to take pictures of the TRD header. Big-K says it fires right up, purrs like a kitten, and has great throttle response. We need to get a new throttle cable.
Title: Re: NEW MR2!!!

In order to shave off more weight I had this idea.
This idea benefits in two ways:

The hideousness of this alone could get us entered. I bet the judges would love it hahaha

So basically, remove everything from behind the rear firewall. It might be a challenge to get an exhaust system crammed in there somewhere. We'll relocate the ECU to the cabin.

If we are worried about getting rear ended, then we can add some inner armor to help with impact.

Actually, I thought about cutting out the trunk. I just thought you guys would think I had lost it altogether. As for the doors,  on the passenger side, just cut down to the outer skin and tack it to the body. The driver door can be cut almost as much, but still needs to retan some mechanism the secure it in the closed position. Dont need door glass, but if we need to we can use plexiglass. Only the windscreen is required to use stock glass or lexan. As far as getting hit in the rear,  the rules say we can't put structure outside the original body lines.

Any thoughts on shortening the front??

Integrate a "safety" cage in the back with the rear wing. Frankendeuce the car.

That is a really great idea. I say let's do the same to the drivers door, and we'll all climb through the open window. Well, unless Bill and Bevin are too old hahahahaha :-X

That is okay, I was referring to adding support to the rear engine firewall, so internal structural reinforcement.

Kevin and I also tossed the idea around of turning the MR2 into a Pagani Zonda complete with a super-car pivoting engine cover, like this:

These ideas are purely to make us stand out from the rest of course, just to be different.

Then let's do it!!

Here are some interior roll cage pictures I have from various MR2s:

No cage here, but it shows a good view of the back firewall
(http://bigmike.marlincrawler.com/images/areo/mr2_mk1_roll_cage02.jpg)

Notice the sleeves on the top bars. This is a bolt-in kit that someone sells apparently. Of course ours will not be removable and thus won't have sleeves.

Here are some more "stripped down" images:

And here is a very simple exhaust setup. Now just image only having one of those pipes. That is VERY light in the rear of the car where we don't want weight:
Title: Re: NEW MR2!!!
Post by: BigMike on March 30, 2010, 10:47:13 PM
This is what I had in mind, a simple direct exhaust. I plan on doing something similar to this except I won't use this rice-rocket muffler:

Of course to be even more simplistic, we will just avoid the last bend and have a center exist exhaust. Least amount of pipe = least amount of weight.

oooooo! Here is a great example. No cat, no flex (we'd want a flex for durability).

What do you think Bill? We could maybe fit a couple glass packs in there. I just don't want the thing to be too loud. Helmet or no helmet, having to put up with an excessively loud exhaust for 8 hours will wear me out.

We can add this front lower a-arm brace to help keep the car rigid. Simple and effective

I forgot to mention that the rear struts that are on the car right now are in really good shape, but the front struts are either not installed or they have a family of squirrels living inside them. I bet we could get the front end bouncing enough to lift a tire.

So before we Autocross this baby, we need to at least get some front struts installed

Got quotes from Toyota today for a new Genuine Toyota Cable. Are you sitting down? Retail is $178.03 and my price is $123.37.

So I vote we get a good used one, and if needed, a spare. I will call TAP tomorrow to see what they want for one over-the-counter. I know TAP has a bad rap, but the Fresno TAP treats us really well and we buy a lot of the hard to find parts from them. Of course a 1/2-off sale wrecking yard would be the cheapest...

I have a set of KYB gr2 shocks at our disposal. I like the brace on the front. Excessively loud exhaust + earplugs = 0 problem. Save a little weight on the exhaust and use a single freeflowing muffler.

probly try to get that cable from bry maybe this weekend? ran into a little snag today. left front wheel lug nut has stripped.
will need to grind off the nut now damn it.
Title: Re: NEW MR2!!!

Did it damage the stud or did it round the nut? If the later, then we have a kit to extract stripped and damaged lug nuts!!
Title: Re: NEW MR2!!!
Post by: Sirdeuce on April 01, 2010, 09:51:07 PM
If it stripped the lug, don't worry. We have plenty of spares. Might even be a good idea to install longer studs, most sanctioning bodies require longer studs, and nuts the are threaded through and open ended.
