I really like this:

And this is my all-time favorite:

Look how simple it is

Hey guys,

Yesterday I picked up a Matchbox MK1 and a Hotwheels MK2 MR2 from BryanH. I am going to model each car into Solidworks and will perform various COSMOSFloWorks analysis on each.

Knowing that these toy cars are not a true scale replica, they will at least get me started after which I will take some measurements of the real 1:1 MR2s to finalize the dimensions.

This will allow me to analyze the exact size of my future air splitter, ideal location for the through-radiator-hood-vent, undercar trays, rear diffuser, ideal rear spoiler location, how to get the most airflow up through the engine compartment, etcetera.

This will be a very slow process because I have many other priorities to do (like school) and won't really get into this (I don't think) until sometime in June.

Here are the models :D Thanks for letting me borrow them Bryan!! :D

Aero and Fluid Theory / Car Wind Tunnel Data
March 27, 2010, 09:41:11 PM
The cd factor is not so important, but rather the air drag index factor, which is the drag coefficient x Frontal Area of the car (cd x A). The lower the number the more aerodynamic the car is.

Also many nose-heavy cars use lift in the front to become more balanced at high speeds.

I helped Bill pickup this SA-WEET 1987 MR2 from Lemoore today 8)

It has a TRD header, HKS muffler, Nology Hotcore spark plug wires, a low mileage engine, low mileage transaxle, and new drive axles.

Engine / Stock valve springs & 8,000+ RPM
February 07, 2010, 09:23:00 AM
Hey Bill,

I was writing down a list of things I want to do for my MR2, and I was thinking that if I choose to raise my redline above 8,000 RPM I might have some valve floating issues if I use an aggressive cam with stock springs.

So this made me think about the FX. If we need some higher rate valve springs, when we are putting the head together, we could install a washer between each valve spring and the head. This won't increase the spring rate, but it will increase the force pushing the valve up which will make it harder to float valves with stock springs

That is our heck-a cheap poor-mans aftermarket valve spring modification :D

Engine / My performance cam gear progress
February 03, 2010, 06:22:06 PM
Hey Bill,

Kevin's brother-in-law got your cam gear digitalized:

And I've been working on my own version, here is a teaser picture:

I'm designing this one to operate on the intake cam which poses a far greater mechanical challenge.

Here are the results from a quick acceleration comparison. The engine used is 130 HP @ 7000 RPM and 107 TQ @ 4800 RPM, redline of 8,000rpm. Weight is 1900 pounds with 55% on the front wheels. All four cars had the same identical data except for transmission (5 or 6 speed) and tires.

C52 is the standard 5-speed transmission & C60 is the 6-speed transmission we can use from a Pontiac Vibe.
The two tire sizes I compared are 13" rim Vs. 14" rim, both having the same 205mm width and 50-series profile.

Engine / To TVIS or not?
January 29, 2010, 09:14:16 PM
Hey Bill,

Assuming the judges have seen half a million 4A-GEs come their way, they ought to know which cars came with TVIS.

Considering the fact that we have the option of dyno tuning, should we ditch the TVIS? If so then we could pull the butterflies out and tig-weld up the holes. Then from the outside, we'd leave most of the system in place. Most of it is below the manifold anyhow, but if they are really meticulous, then they would know if it was missing.

The simple way would be to just remove the butterflies from the shaft & leave the shaft and the rest of the TVIS in place...
