Electronics / AEM EMS-4
August 27, 2011, 09:14:55 AM
Mikey! Check out this little universal gem. The AEM EMS-4. I think it would be a better choice than the Microsquirt. The cost might be a little more, but the thing doesn't need anything extra to do the job, like an extra driver amplifier for a COP ignition. Probabaly has better tech support to boot. The Microsquirt would be about $700- $800 to get going, the EMS-4, between $1000 and $1200.

Team Meetings / Next meeting place
August 07, 2011, 04:10:38 PM
I gotta check out this place. raceroom-fresno.com. Possible meeting place. I'm sure the food is cheesey, but the possibility of a good video race is intriguing. I do have the flyers they hand out, as well as the prices. I'll see about getting it scanned and posted.

Is it just me, or does the new Lexus CTS hybrid look like the Mazda 3? And the new Ferrari looks a lot like the Autobachs Garaiya? I'd really like the designers at Ferrari to hear this one!

Chit Chat / Japan's quake
March 18, 2011, 05:23:56 PM
Holy crap! What a tragedy. One thing after the next. But with one disaster after the other, and the power released from the tectonic plates moving, I want to know if Mt. Fuji is remaining stable. I'd hate to see that on top of all the rest of this. Does any body have the savy to find info on this subject? Yeah, I need help finding a site that has this info. I would like to know more 'cause noone is saying anything on that 'dormant' volcano. I did find that Fuji erupted 7 times in the last millenia. The last eruption was about 300 years ago, 100 years before that. Could this quake have awakened Fuji?

Engine Theory / BOOST
February 01, 2011, 08:13:15 AM
We all know about forced in duction, I hope anyway. The low end power of the roots supercharger. The rediculous high end potential of tubocharging. Best of both worlds? Twincharge! But here's one more to consider, Mike's going to have fun with this one! It's not new, been used to boost performance for some time now, but not talked about much from the street perormance crowd. Compound boost! Supercharge the engine? Yes! Add a turbocharger? Yes! At the same time? Yes! Supercharge the engine, turbocharge the supercharger! That;s right! Increase the supercharger's inlet pressure! Tune the low end power to get off the line with the roots charger, where it does the best increase in power! As the roots type charger tends to drop off at the upper RPM's where a turbo shines. Hmmm. Boost the inlet side of the superchargeer? Makes for some interesting tuning challenges. Say you are getting 10 pounds boost from your supercharger. Boost the inlet to 7 pounds, 1/2 atmospheric pressure. Now you have 15 pounds of boost, theoretcally of course. But the real advantage is the expanded powerband! 10 pounds off the line, but when the turbo comes on, you get the 15 pounds! And that would carry through to beyond where the supercharger drops off! Also, since you don't have to overdrive the supercharger as much the engine RPM can be raised! Imagine the possibilities! Only problem I can think of with the Toyota superchargers is the flourine coating an the impellers. Spinneing the SC12 and SC14 over 11,500 RPM is said to melt the coating. How would boosting the inlet affect this? Is the melting of the flourine due to the heat produced by the increase in pressure or just an effect from increased RPM?

General Automotive Talk / GM rotary?!
January 29, 2011, 08:59:21 AM
In 1970, General Motors paid $50,000, 000 (?) for a license to produce a rotory powered car! The little engine was built as a 3.38 liter, 2 rotor. It was tested in the Vega, and not used due to efficiency deficitts. After a few years of T&T, the engine was getting about 20 MPG, but had longevity problems and  was abandoned.  At least they got the displacement calculations right! Still, could you imagine if GM actually ran with the whole rotary thing? What an abortion that would be! :puke:

That's got to be it! hey let's party like the end is nigh!! Solar flare in 2013!?  Oh, we didn't die. Well now we have a good possibility! An asteroiid is calculated to hit the planet April 13, 2029! Yeah Apophos! here it comes! Oh, the calculations were off and 2036 is the year we have to worry about? Damn, I'll be 106 years old then. Oh well. Yeah Apophos I'll wait for you!!

Cars / Life with ZMM ZMM 3
November 09, 2010, 01:36:48 PM
I bought the car for the little wife originally. We had a Mazda 3. It was a nice car, just lacking a little bit. The handling was decent in stock form, lots of fun in the hills, could hold it's own down the hill, but uphill it was a bit taxed. Anyone that knows me knows I'm a devout toyota nut! And I like to mod my cars. I thought the litte 3 neede a little kore power, about 30 horse would bring the car to life! A little work on the suspension would be nice too. I read an article on the proposed upgraded Mazda 3, by Mazdaspeed. Sport tuned suspension and a turboed 2.3 liter! I'm not a big fan of turboed cars, I like the sound and feel of an N/A powerplant, but this thing was going to have 263 hp and 280 lbs of torque! I wanted to try one! Time went by, I had to try one. More time went by, I wanted one! Release date kept moving up, finally, release date was in July 2006!! I'm GETTING one!! First shipment coming to the U.S. shores got knock off the ship and is resting at the bottom of the Pacific ocean.Yyyaaarrrggghhhhhh! Told the sales guy at Lithia to call me when they get in........ November 8 2006, 9:00 PM. I got a call, it was the only asian dude I ever met named William. We have one! Oh boy, I'll be there, it's mine!! 8:45 AM the paperwork was done and and we had the first Mazdaspeed 3 in the valley! Lithia didn't open for another 15 minutes and I was driving away. I looked at Will on the steps of the showroom floor ad waved. There was a guy standing on the steps with him, surprised look on his face! William was pointing at us. The guy was there to buy the 3. Sorry it's MINE!! Haahaahaaa!

Suspension / On the fly camber adjuster
November 08, 2010, 11:50:15 AM
Rig a system that works an eccentric pivot at the lower control arm bushings. Like turning the 'crash' bolt. The system could be rigged to the steering knuckle so the change can be made during a turn. Increase negative camber on the outside tire and decrease it on the inside. This would allow a zero or close to zero straightline camber, and change to the agressive camber in a turn. Imagine the inside tire is at a negative camber reducing contact patch area. Move the inside tire to a point where it has positive camber. Both tires will have the top and bottom of the tire oriented in the same direction! Now the outside tire won't be required to perform all the work! Reduced understeer!
